Past Simpleは高校の英語で教わる「過去形」です。過去形は、動詞の形が過去形という形に変化します。それで、文字通り過去の出来事を示します。
上記は過去形という時制が表す実際の時間(time)です。
基本ルール:
過去形には、edが後ろに付くRegular verb (規則動詞)と、不規則に形がかわるIrregular verb (不規則動詞)があります。基本的に、過去形の場合、動詞の形は、主語 (I/ he, she /it/we/they)によって動詞の形を変える必要はないです。(現在形の場合だけ、he/she/it の場合のみ 動詞に“s”をつけます)。
Regular Verb (規則動詞)の場合、最後にedをつける。ただし、to studyなどの最後に “y”がつく動詞は、studiedになる。
例：
I visited Australia last year. (動詞 visitに、edをプラス)
I played piano when I was a child (動詞 play + ed)
I studied mass media and communication when I was in the U.S. (study + ed)
Irregular verb (不規則動詞)の場合は、過去形になるとそれぞれ形が変わる。
例:
I bought a hoody parker at the department store. (buy => bought)
It cost like a 7000 yen, and it was expensive. (costの過去形 => cost)
I went school yesterday, and nobody was there. I did not know it was Sunday.(goの過去形)
I got a straight “A” on Introduction to economics but I got an “F” on English class. (getの過去形)
Questions(疑問形)と Negative sentences (否定形)
疑問文は、助動詞Doを使用する。過去形なので、助動詞Do => Didになる。
助動詞が付く場合は、edをとって（原型)という形に戻す。
例:
Do you go to school? => Did you go to school yesterday? ( Did you wentではない)
Do they have a good time? => Did they have a good time? (Did they hadではない)
Yes, they do./No, they don’t. => Yes, they did./ No, they did not.
What did you do?!!!
Where did professor go?
ただし、be動詞は違うルールに従う。
- 過去形でも現在形でも形が変わる。
- 日本語にはない概念で、状態を表す意味の 「動詞」
以上の二つは理解しておくこと。Be動詞の変化形以下。
例
I am a student at APU.
I was a student at APU in 2011.
He was cute but he is ugly now.
There is 〜/There are 〜の場合 => There was 〜/There were〜
次にどういう時にPast Simpleで表現するのか示しました。
1. 過去のある時点で終了している出来事を表現する時 Past simpleにします。過去で終了している出来事なので、現在まで続いていない状態を示します。この説明が理解しずらい場合は、「英語母語話者は頭の中で無意識に時間を点と線で捉えている」ことを思い出してください。
(Past simple is used when we talk about finished events in the past with no connection to the present)
例:
Leonardo painted the Mona Lisa. (レオナルドがモナリサを書いた。) (paintの過去形)
The Vikings invaded Britain. (バイキングはイギリスを侵略した。) (invadeの過去形)
2. Yesterday, last weekなど過去の時間を示す単語がある文では、Past simpleにします。
(We use past simple with a finished time word (yesterday, last week, at 2 o’clock, in 2003)例:
I went to the cinema yesterday.
We visited Japan in 2007.3.過去に起こった出来事を連ねて言う時
(We use it for stories / lists of events in the past.)例:
He went to a café, sat down and lit a cigarette. (go, sit, lightの過去形)
Yesterday I went to the library, met a friend for lunch, and played tennis. (go, meet, playの過去形)

4. 既に起こった事件、ニュースの詳細を説明する時、過去形(past simple)になります。
