【サブタイトル】
英語で学ぶメディア論・メディア論で学ぶ英語ゼミ
【講義の目的・内容】
本ゼミA&Bの目的・内容は、担当教員の専門領域を中心にメディア論/制作実践を含むメディアリテラシーの知識を平易な英語で学習し、同時に英語での学習スキルを少しでも向上させることである。メディア論で学ぶ英語のゼミ、あるいは英語で学ぶメディア論のゼミと位置付ける。ただし、これはあくまで理想である。履修者のやる気度、学習態度、事前希望が通ったかどうかも影響する。とにかく最低限英語も学びつつ、学習能力を向上させるようなゼミとなりえる。
授業は英語を「中心」とし、日英両言語を使用する。英語科目ではなく、また英語のみで学習するゼミあるいは英語の講義ではない。演習であり、教える教わるという考え方をやめること。先生は学習環境を整える立場で、皆さんの学習をコーチングしていく。メディア論に関係する基礎的内容を学習したあと、自分で主体的に学習したいことを掘り下げていくゼミである。なお、主たる使用言語は日本語とするが、正確には日本語と英語が混ざる。英語のみで実施するゼミは既に１つ以上ある（あるいはあることとなっていることから）、それとは異なり、本ゼミは英語を中心に日英双方で実施する2年生のメディア論ゼミと理解してほしい。バイリンガルでメディアを学び研究してきた教員として、みなさんの学習を日本語および英語でサポートしていき、実際に英語を使用する訓練もしていく。春学期のプレゼンは日本語で、秋学期は春学期で実施した日本語のプレゼンを直訳やAI的な翻訳表現でなく、AI翻訳ツールも活用しつつ自然な英語にする作業をし、英語でプレゼンをする訓練をする。
【学修到達目標】
本ゼミの到達目標は以下である。
-メディア研究における重要な問題や抽象的な考え方を日英双方の言語で理解することができるようになることを目指そうと最低限考えるようになる。
-メディアに関係する情報を収集、評価し、他人にわかりやすく説明できるようになる、あるいは情報を発信できるようになる。
-少なくとも日常生活におけるメディアの影響について自覚できるようになり、自分がどう行動するべきか考えられるようになる。
-メディア研究の基礎的な知識を学び、メディア分野の問題について日本語と英語で議論することを目指そうと思えるようになる。
-本ゼミで得た知識をもとに、本ゼミ終了後生涯学習者となる素養を身につける。
【講義スケジュール】
演習A
1-7の授業は、メディア論等における学習方法や自分の興味感心は何かを考えつつ、効果的な外国語学習方法を習得する期間とする。全くメディア論と関係ない英会話の練習も含め、学習するための基本知識や方法を習得することを目指す。
8-13からメディア論で問題になるテーマを各自選び発表の準備をしてもらう。理想では隔週で発表担当グループは課題の進捗状況や調べたことを発表してもらう方向にいきたいが、多分難しいので、学期末ごろに英語または日本語で発表してもらう形になる。授業5回目以降から英語フリートークも含めた30分のミニ英会話練習も実施する。並行して、個人にて授業学習を進めてもらう。これらの成果は後期のゼミとあわせて、最終的にはレポートまたはメディア・コンテンツ（映像コンテンツ含む）にまとめ、人に見せられる形にすることを目指す。
詳細:
1-7 ゼミのための外国語学習方法を理解し学習する。片言もでもいいからアウトプット訓練をかねた英会話練もする。自分の興味感心は何か、メディアコミュニケーション学科で勉強したいことは何かを考えてみる期間。
8. 尚、8以降から後期まであげたテーマは、こういうテーマで発表してほしいなという例である。順番は立て続けに説明と発表準備のような形になる可能性が大きい。最初は、なぜメディアを学ぶか:

【指導方法】
概要詳細は英語シラバスを確認し頑張って拝読してほしい。日本語で説明するとしたら、スポーツ訓練や部活のようなゼミで、監督やコーチが指導するような方法をとる。メディア論に関連したテーマを講義するのではなく、皆さん自身で調べ学習をしてもらい、それをお互いゼミで共有していきながら学習していくことを理想とする。その過程で、先生が、情報収集方法を含むスキルも含め指導、コーチングしていく。それが指導方法となる。黙っている、あるいは何もしない場合は、こちらもコーチングできないので、無駄な時間を過ごすことになるのでそこは注意してほしいが、例年であると実際にそんな感じの人が半分くらいいるため、その状況に合わせて指導方法は変わる。春学期最初の7回で何を勉強していきたいか考える時間を設けているので、その時間を活用し、演習A&Bでどんなテーマにしていくか考えること。なおテーマはメディアに関係したものに限定する。テーマは何であれ、アカデミックスキル、特にプレゼン方法を学ぶことを中心とする。
【事前・事後学修】
大学設置基準では、授業外で十分な学習時間を確保することを条件に単位を付与することになっている。毎回手取り足取り課題を出すわけではないが、最低でも4時間分このゼミのために学習時間を確保すると考えてほしい。あくまで時間は目安で、基礎ゼミで全くアカデミックスキルを習得していない場合は、基礎スキルを復習するための時間も必要になる。
事前学修
ゼミの準備（語学学習、メディア論についての勉強、プレゼンなどで扱うテーマに関して下調べ、発表やグループ学習の準備など、２時間程度）
事後学修
ゼミで疑問に思ったことなどを整理する、足りないアカデミックスキルを学習する、外国語学習、メディア論に関連したテーマについての学習など(2時間程度）
【成績評価の方法・基準】
東洋大の成績評価基準に従う。また表計算アプリを使用して総合成績を計算する。
授業参加貢献度、意欲など35 %
ゼミレポートまたはメディア・コンテンツ作成25 %.
ゼミ外学習30%.

【受講要件】
特に必須はないが、最低限の英語応対能力があることが望ましい。英語および日本語も含むが、リアクションをとる、主体的にわからないことは確認するなど最低限のコミュニケーションスキルがあることが望ましい。わからないことを恥じずわかるようにするための努力をする姿勢があることが望ましい。物怖じせず必要に応じて発言、確認できるようにする態度があると尚可。基礎ゼミで学習したと思われるアカデミックスキルに関する知識があることがを求める。人間として備えている最低限のリスペクトを持てることは最低限の要件とする。
【テキスト】
担当教員が構築した授業用簡易webサイトを活用する。当サイトは授業の進行と並行して、受講者の提案を取り入れながら随時更新していく。本サイトにおいて必要なテキストを配布することもある。また、社会学部バイリンガルテキスト（授業内で一部抜粋を配布する。基礎Bの準備にも使用したいと「は」思っている。なお、英語表現においてAI翻訳などをそのまま活用した箇所があり、少々読みづらく書いている印象を受ける箇所がいくつかある。そこは担当教員が補足する）

【備考】
特別な支援や特別な配慮が必要な場合は必ず担当教員に相談すること。相談の上ゼミの進め方を決める。
ゼミ外学習を求める大変きつい授業である。真摯な姿勢で参加すること。担当教員も学習しやすい環境を可能な範囲で整える。態度が極端に悪い場合、他の学習者の妨げになるので退出を求める場合がある。全てのゼミへの出席が前提である。楽をしたい人、単位を浮かせたい人にとっては不満の残るゼミとなる。
出席点呼をした場合は、はっきりとした声で返答すること。しなければ出席とみなさない。対話必修のゼミであり、ゼミ内で先生や他の学生が質問やコメントをした場合は適切な反応を求める。他人に反応しない、無言、無視、舌打ちなどをした場合はコミュニケーションを拒否したと捉え出席とみなさない。また出席をすればいいわけではなく、実際にゼミに参加すること。何もせず非論理的且つ非合理的なクレームをつけた場合は、信頼関係がないと判断し、お互いに相談時間を設けた上で、教員は相応の対応を取る。
Toyonetaceおよび授業用簡易Webページにて参考資料や映像資料を配布する場合がある。定期的に確認すること。
Google などその他ガジェットを使用する予定でいるので、めんどくさくても対応することを求める。
指示の意図が理解できない、何をしているのかわからない、何がわからないかもわからず混乱しているという場合は必ず担当教員に確認をとること。何も言わなければ対応が難しい。それを避けるために、必要に応じた対話と確認作業を求める。
よく考えてゼミを選択すること。主体的に考えていくための学習スキルがあることが望ましい。担当教員はアドバイスはするものの、講義する授業ではない。演習科目であり、実習である。座って何か説明されて練習問題を解く授業ではないことは理解する。ただし、放置しゼミ生が好き勝手し単位をとるゼミではないので、ゼミ実習過程で先生がコチ―ングする場合が多々あることは理解する。うるさいと思うようにせず、その都度対話を求める。スポーツ、あるいは部活のような感じで進むと思うこと。履修する上での注意事項、ルールは最初の授業で説明するほか、授業webサイトで共有する。

Introduction to Media Studies in Plain English: Learning about Media in English to Expand Your Horizon
【Course Purpose and Description】
The purpose of this course is to learn media studies/media literacy and to get used to learning about media in plain English. This course presents a variety of key issues critical to media studies, including media influences and representations, plus media literacy skills if time allows. In addition, this course offers you to gain the confidence to get information in English and to express your thoughts in English while studying media although this is not an “English as a Second Language” or “English class.”
We should learn “media” because media have tremendous power to influence our perspectives of the world we see every day in both positive and negative ways. For your note, English is one of the dominant languages used in media studies/media-related academic disciplines. Besides, media industries/news industries in English-speaking countries have become prevalent in the globalized world. Therefore, we need to think critically about that dominance as non-English-speaking media scholars. Sadly, there, you need to be able to use English as well. This course offers for those who want to be independent thinkers and a learner of media while gaining practical English language skills.

【Instructional Methods】
The class will be conducted through a combination of lectures, individual guidance by a professor, and group/pair work. The professor will share his experience to help students further learning. This course will also be conducted almost entirely in English (When it is necessary, Japanese will be used to help students understand and avoid confusion, but Japanese use will be minimized for learning purposes). All students are encouraged and required to use English in the classroom (I will guide you on how to do that. Do not worry if you are not fluent in English. I do not really care how bad or good you are in English. This is not an English class. Instead, we are trying to learn media in English).
For the spring semester, I have decided to include 7 English practice sessions to prepare students to use English in this course. Students will learn the necessary English skill from the first to the 7 weeks, followed by in and out of the class-learning exercise, using media studies-related readings and visual materials.
From the 8th week to the fall term, we will start discussing critical issues in media studies, of course, in English if it is possible. There will be minimum use of Japanese, but I allow you to use Japanese if you think it is hard to say things in English. In addition, we will have a discussion/free talk session every week to give you time to practice expressing the idea in English for about 30 minutes throughout the year..
【Self-study before/after classes】
This seminar course requires sufficient study time, including assignments outside of class. According to the Standards for the Establishment of Universities (大学設置基準 in Japan）, students should spend sufficient study time outside of class per week for two credits. This course requires a minimum of 4 hours of study outside of class per week.
Before
You may get an out-of-class assignment, so you should prepare before coming to class. Even if you do not have any assignment, you are expected to spend time on studying media, and practice English as well (2 hours).
After
Review what you have learned in this class, and if necessary, use the reference materials to further your study. Identify any points you did not fully understand and prepare to ask questions in the next class (about 2 hours)

The overall evaluation will be based on the grading standards of Toyo University
Attendance, participation, effort, and group activities 35 %
Final assignment 25 %

【Pre-requisites】
None for prerequisite. However, the minimum level of English proficiency is desirable. What I mean by the minimum is that you can at least react and say something in English. Regardless of language, I expect all students to be able to communicate at least ( I need to emphasize that in a Japanese university context). Your effort and willingness to study. Few critical thinking skills. Having respect for a professor and other students will be nice.

There is no prescribed text. I will utilize and share class materials/youtube links via a website specifically built for this course. This website will be updated constantly in parallel with the class progress, incorporating suggestions from students.

Media ethics and law, Toyo has a “lecture on public opinion,” so that may be related to this course, “writing for media” “news media studies” other subjects to study the impact of media on society, statistical research methods, anything related to the internet, etc.

This is a very demanding course that requires extra learning time. There will be many assignments and homework.
Regular attendance and participation are essential for being successful in this course. This is an intensive course. You should not miss the classes. However, I will support your learning as much as possible if you are serious about learning.
Those who want easy credits (楽単) will be dissatisfied with this course. For your note, you might have a hard time following this class if you are not used to interactive American styles of instruction. If you have a hard time communicating effectively with others, please consult me. I will help you out even if you are not a good communicator. I wasn’t a good communicator in the past.
If you also do not feel like studying and have a doubt about being in the university, I would recommend making a brave withdrawal from the university to think about what you really want to do. I do respect that decision. Sitting and sleeping in class may lead to being scolded by me, and that would waste your’s and my time. I really do hope you will value your life. I do not want to teach if students do not get anything from my course, and I do not want to be a guy teaching things students hate. I try my best of my ability to provide valuable lessons. I expect students to do the same. I hope you understand that when you decide to register for this course.
There is one thing I want you to do me a favor. Please promise me to work hard/smart (but not “smart ass” like a street smart). If you have any difficulties, I will work with you. I promise all students who enroll in my class to learn/get something out of this course.
Other class regulations and requirements will be announced in the first class and become available online in the second week.
I will promise to organize a safe environment for students taking this course as much as possible.
Use English in the classroom (even in broken English. If you think it is necessary, you can use Japanese to communicate with me. However, at least you need to try to say something in English. You can make a lot of mistakes while you try. I will respond in English even though you ask in Japanese. If I think it is necessary, I will train you with speaking skills on-site.)
