【講義の目的・内容】

　本演習の目的は、学術的技術・作法、知らないことを学ぶための技法および研究の進め方の基礎を身につけることである。具体的には、ノートテイキング、レジュメ作成、情報収集方法の基本を習得し、集めた情報を評価しいかに活用していくかを学習する。その上で、効果的なディスカッション方法、プレゼンテーションの方法、レポートの書き方などを含め、獲得した知識や情報を効果的にアウトプットする方法を学ぶ。
　大学では「自ら考え、調べ、論ずること」が求められる。これは学術研究のスタート地点であり、長い人生を送る上で不可欠な知的基礎体力を身につけることでもある。本演習および基礎演習B終了後に自ら学び続けるための基本姿勢と技術を身につけることを、本基礎ゼミの最終目的とする。
　担当教員による講義及び個別指導、受講者の主体的な学習活動を組み合わせて授業を進める。担当教員の研究者としての経験も共有しながら、グループディスカッションなど様々な学習活動を行う。

【学修到達目標】

1.情報を収集・整理することができ、それを評価・吟味することができるようになる
2.必要な文献・データの収集方法を身につけ、収集した情報をどこまで活用するか判断できるようになる
3.レポート・プレゼンテーションなど、それぞれの形式に沿った知識・情報の提示ができるようになる
4.自分の考えを、論理的にまとめ、わかりやすく説明できるようになる
5.社会問題を検証する際に必要な情報や知識を収集し、その情報を活用して、意見を言えるようになる。

また本演習のグループ活動を通して、他者との対話能力を磨き、主体的な学習活動を通して問題の発見・分析能力を養成する。最終的に、学習に対する新しい考え方を身に着け、自ら学び続けるための基本姿勢と技術をみにつける。

1.オリエンテーション/ゼミのすすめ方/教員と学生の自己紹介/大学で学ぶ意味

2-7 学ぶための基礎技法を学びつつ、自ら学ぶための素養を身につける練習をする。黙って座って何もしないという状況から抜け出すための学習活動をしていく。具体的には ノートテイク、要約の方法、学習のためのガジェット活用法、学習姿勢、図書館/データベース活用方法、検索方法、資料収集方法、資料評価方法、文献資料の読み方、情報整理方法、テーマの見つけ方、議題設定、問題点の絞り方を身につける。調査方法、情報源の管理方法、 問題の本質を掴む方法、批判的に考える手法についても基本的な知識を身につける。その他情報の探し方、政府統計資料、統計データの読み方・注意点についても学ぶ。プレゼンなどを含むアウトプット方法の基礎に関しても学習していく

【指導方法】

担当教員による講義及び個別指導、受講者の主体的な学習活動を組み合わせて授業を進める。担当教員の研究者としての経験も共有しながら、グループディスカッション、ペアワークによる学習活動を行う。

第1回目〜第6回目まではアカデミック・スキルの基礎を身につけるため、先生による短い解説や授業資料を見て、実習を進める。第7回で自分の興味関心を考えたあと、残りは決められたテーマを選び、それに関連した発表を順番にしてもらう。

指導方法および内容の詳細についてはオリエンテーションにて細かく説明する。

【事前・事後学修】

本演習科目は、授業外課題など、授業以外での十分な学習時間を要する。大学設置基準では、演習科目については、2単位につき週4時間授業外での学習が必要とされている。本演習では最低週4時間の授業外学習時間が必要となる。

事前学修

本演習に関連した授業外課題がたくさん出されると思うので、予習や準備をした上でゼミに臨む (2時間）

事後学修

本演習で学んだことを復習し、必要であれば授業で指定された参考資料を使用して学習をすすめる。理解が十分でない点を明らかにし、次回の授業で質問できるよう準備する。（２時間程度）

特にないが、わからない状況でもなんとかわかろうとする姿勢が最低限あることが望ましい。わからないことを恥じずわかるようにするための努力をする姿勢があることが望ましい。

先生が作成したweb資料、ワークブックを配布する。また、社会学部バイリンガルテキスト（授業内で一部抜粋を配布する。基礎Bの準備にも使用する。なお、英語表現において少々難しく書いている印象を受ける箇所がある。そこは担当教員が補足する）

【備考】

特別な支援や特別な配慮が必要な場合は必ず担当教員に相談すること。対話必修の授業のため、対話が苦手な場合も教員に相談すること。

授業外学習を求める大変きつい授業である。スキルを見につけ向上させるためには、手間とエネルギーを要する。時間のかかる作業であることを理解すること。

ゼミには真摯な姿勢で参加すること。担当教員も学習しやすい環境を可能な範囲で整える。態度が極端に悪い場合、他の学習者の妨げになるので退出を求める場合がある。全てのゼミへの出席が前提である。出席点呼をした場合は、はっきりとした声で返答すること。しなければ出席とみなさない。対話必修の授業であり、ゼミ内で先生や他の受講者が質問やコメントをした場合は適切な反応を求める。他人に反応しない、無言、無視、舌打ちなどをした場合はコミュニケーションを拒否したと捉え出席とみなさない。また出席をすればいいわけではなく、実際に演習に参加すること。何もせずクレームをつけた場合は、信頼関係がないと判断する。

毎授業、具体的指示をGoogle アプリJamboardで示す。ゼミ仲間と確認した上で授業内活動に参加すること。

Toyonetaceおよび授業用簡易Webページにて参考資料や映像資料を配布する場合がある。定期的に確認すること。



指示の意図が理解できない、何をしているのかわからない、何がわからないかもわからず混乱しているという場合は必ず担当教員に確認をとること。何も言わなければ対応が難しい。それを避けるために、必要に応じた対話と確認作業を求める。



自ら学習していくためのスキルを身につけるゼミであることを理解すること。先生は学習環境を整え必要に応じて個別にアドバイスはするものの、講義する授業ではない。ゼミという演習科目であり、実習である。座って何か説明されて練習問題を解く授業ではないことは理解する。

【Course Purpose and Description】

The purpose of this course is to learn basic academic skills to survive in this university. In addition, you will acquire techniques for “learning” what you do not know. Specifically, you will practice effective note-taking, resume writing, plus conducting research (including gathering, evaluating, and utilizing the information you have collected). You will then learn techniques to effectively output the knowledge and information you have gathered, including effective discussion, presentation, and writing skills.

You are expected to find your own academic interests at any college or university, then conduct your studies yourself with a little help from experts or other people. That requires a lot of discipline and knowledge to find the truth in whatever you want to study. Proper training is necessary to master academic skills. You need to start somewhere if you do not want to be ignorant. This is the starting point for academic research. Learning “how to study in academic settings” definitely helps you acquire intellectual strength, essential for survival in the future. After completing this course, the ultimate goal is to develop a professional attitude in sharing knowledge and information while mastering skills to continue learning to be an independent thinker and learner.

【Instructional Methods】

This course will be conducted through a combination of lectures, individual guidance, group discussions, and pair work. I will share my experience as a researcher to help you learn.

You will learn the necessary academic skills through short lectures, followed by practical in and out of class-learning exercises and assignments From the first to the sixth session, students will learn the basics of academic skills. After the midterm, you need to prepare for individual presentations to gain the basic academic output skills with a given topic.

【Self-study before/after classes】

This course requires sufficient study time outside of class, including assignments outside of class. According to the Standards for the Establishment of Universities（大学設置基準in Japan), you should spend four hours of study outside of class per week for two credits. This course requires a minimum of 4 hours of study outside of class per week.

Before

There will be many out-of-class assignments related to this course, so please well prepare for a class beforehand (2 hours).

After

Review what you have learned in each class, and if necessary, use the reference materials specified in the class to further your study. Identify anything that you do not fully understand, and prepare to ask questions in the next class. (about 2 hours)

Distribute the web materials and online workbooks that I have prepared for this particular course.

Bilingual textbook on sociology (Some excerpts will be handed out in class. This will also be used in preparation for Academic SKills B. I felt some textbook parts use quite difficult-to-read expressions, especially when talking about an abstract idea. So the instructor will provide further explanations if it is necessary both in plain English and Japanese)

This is a very demanding class that requires extra learning time outside the class. There will be many assignments and homework. You need to spend a lot of time and energy to learn and improve your skills. Please understand that this is a time-consuming process.

Those who want easy credits (楽単) will be dissatisfied with this course. For your note, you might have a hard time following this class if you are not used to interactive styles of instructions. If you have a hard time communicating effectively with others, please consult with me. I will help you out even if you are not a good communicator. I wasn’t a good communicator in the past.

When the I make a roll call (出欠確認), please answer in a clear voice. If you do not, your attendance will not be counted. This is an interactive class, and if I or other students ask questions or make comments in the classroom, you are expected to respond appropriately. If you do not respond to others, ignore all comments, or tsk-tsking(舌打ち), it will be considered a refusal to communicate and will not be counted as attendance. Also, attending is not enough, you must actually participate in each class. If you do nothing and complain, I will assume that there is no trust relationship and I will act accordingly.

Specific instructions for each class will be given on the Google app Jamboard. Reference materials and audio-visual materials will be distributed on Toyonetace and a web page for this course. Please check them periodically.


If you do not understand the instruction or you get lost or get confused, be sure to check with me. If you don’t say anything, it will be difficult for me to help you. To avoid this, I really ask you to communicate with me a lot.


Understand that this is a course to develop academic skills to become an independent learner. I will try my best to create a better learning environment for you and give you individual guidance. This is a practical training course. Understand that this is not a lecture where you sit and listen to a mumbling teacher then take fill-out-the-blanks types of tests. You need to interact with people and solve actual problems. I am trying to give you the real-life skills for you to become an independent thinker and learner.

I will tell you other rules and details related to the course on the first day of the class and distributed them on Toyonetace and other online sites after the second week.


There is one thing I want you to do me a favor. Please promise to work hard. If you have any difficulties, I will work with you. I promise all students who enroll in my course to learn/get something out of this course.
